Privacy

This is a short, plain answer because there is not much to disclose: reading the site collects nothing at all, and the only place it collects anything is the correction form, only when you choose to use it.

What reading the site collects

Nothing. There are no user accounts, no browser storage, no analytics scripts, no advertising scripts, and no third-party embeds of any kind, and reading a page sets no cookies. Every page you read is generated from a fixed set of files and sent to your browser as plain HTML and CSS.

What your browser or network sends anyway

Any web request carries ordinary technical information, such as your IP address and browser type, to the server that answers it and to networks in between. This site's own server code does not log, store, or process that information beyond what is needed to answer the request, with one exception described below. The hosting provider may keep its own short-lived infrastructure logs for operating the service; those are outside this site's own code and are not used for tracking or advertising.

Reporting a correction

The correction form is the one place this site stores anything. If you submit it, we keep the text you wrote, the page it is about, the source you offered if you gave one, and your name and email address if you chose to give them so we can follow up. We do not keep your IP address: it is used in memory only, to slow down automated abuse of the form, and is never written down. Nothing from this form reaches analytics, advertising or any third party. It goes into a private review queue read by the person running this site, never a mailing list or a public inbox.

Submissions are kept for a limited time (currently 18 months) and then deleted automatically. If you leave an email address, it is used only to reply about that specific report. Reports are kept in one file on a single storage volume with no backup, so a failure of that volume can lose them.

The correction form sets one cookie when you open it: a random security token that lets the server check a submission came from the form itself. It is a session cookie, it holds no personal information, and nothing else on the site reads it. No other page sets a cookie.

Future features

If the site ever adds something that collects more than described here, such as accounts, a personal garage, a public registry or advertising, that feature will go through its own privacy, security and accessibility review first, and this page will say what it collects, why, and how long it is kept.

Questions

Use the correction form for anything about a specific fact on the site. The site has no other public contact address. See Terms and rights for how sources and citations are handled.
